Nido de los Aguiluchos is a medium hiking route in La Huasteca, Santa Catarina, Nuevo Leon. The trail is approximately 5.6 km with about 500 meters of elevation gain and usually takes around 2.5 hours.Trail overviewNido de los Aguiluchos is one of those hikes that looks short on paper but feels a lot bigger once you are on the mountain. The route climbs quickly from the Vistas de la Huasteca area toward a viewpoint with wide-open views of La Huasteca, the surrounding rock walls, and the city in the distance. The trail is not very long, but it has a lot of sun exposure, loose dirt, rocky sections, and parts where you will need to use your hands. This is not a casual walk, and it is definitely not a good route to underestimate just because the distance is short. The reward is the viewpoint. From the top, you get one of the best perspectives of the inside of La Huasteca without needing to do a full technical climbing route. However, there is the option to add a technical climbing part at the end, where safety equipment is needed. Route summaryThe first part of the route involves walking from the parking area toward the tunnel and the start of the trail. After that, the path becomes narrow and more rugged, with branches, thorns, and dry semi-desert terrain. As you continue, you will reach a section with large graffiti-covered rocks. After this point, the climb becomes more serious. The terrain gets steeper, looser, and more exposed, especially as you approach the upper sections of the route. The hardest part is near the end. The slope gets very steep, the ground is loose, and there are sections where you need to use your hands to climb safely. This is where good shoes, patience, and spacing between hikers really matter. At the top, the trail reaches the viewpoint, where you get impressive views into La Huasteca and toward Monterrey. This route reaches the viewpoint area, not the actual technical Nido climb. Going beyond the viewpoint toward the actual Nido de los Aguiluchos requires proper climbing equipment and ideally a certified guide. If you have equipment to do rappel, you can rappel down to a crazy have that is basically a giant hole in the mountain. The descent is the part where most people should be the most careful. Loose dirt and slippery steps make it easy to fall, so take your time and avoid kicking rocks onto people below you.Tips and safetyThe main highlight is the viewpoint over La Huasteca. Resumen

Nido de los Aguiluchos es una de esas rutas que se ve corta en el mapa, pero se siente mucho más intensa cuando ya estás en la montaña. La ruta sube rápido desde la zona de Vistas de la Huasteca / Huasteca Living hacia un mirador con vistas abiertas de La Huasteca, las paredes de roca y la ciudad al fondo.

No es una ruta larga, pero sí tiene bastante exposición al sol, tierra suelta, secciones rocosas y partes donde vas a tener que usar las manos para avanzar con seguridad. No es una caminata casual, y definitivamente no conviene subestimarla solo porque la distancia se ve corta.

La recompensa es la vista. Desde arriba tienes una de las mejores perspectivas hacia el interior de La Huasteca sin necesidad de hacer una ruta completa de escalada técnica. Aun así, existe la opción de agregar una parte técnica al final, pero para eso se necesita equipo de seguridad y experiencia.

Cómo llegar

La ruta empieza cerca de la zona de Vistas de la Huasteca / Huasteca Living, del lado de la entrada al Parque La Huasteca. Se puede llegar en carro normal, pero sí importa dónde te estaciones.

La mejor opción es estacionarte por la calle Alberto García Guzmán, cerca de los complejos de Huasteca Living, donde la zona se siente más visible y vigilada. Desde ahí caminas hacia el área del puente/túnel donde empieza la ruta. Puede haber lugares más cercanos para estacionarse, pero son más aislados, así que yo prefiero dejar el carro en una zona que se sienta más segura y caminar un poco más.

Actualmente no hay una cuota oficial de acceso para esta ruta, pero siempre respeta propiedad privada, señalamientos y cualquier cambio de acceso en la zona.

Ruta

La primera parte consiste en caminar desde el área de estacionamiento hacia el túnel y el inicio del sendero. Después de eso, el camino se vuelve más angosto y rústico, con ramas, espinas y terreno seco típico de La Huasteca.

Más adelante llegas a una sección con rocas grandes cubiertas de graffiti. Después de ese punto, la subida se pone más seria. El terreno se vuelve más empinado, más suelto y más expuesto, especialmente conforme te acercas a la parte alta de la ruta.

La parte más difícil está cerca del final. La pendiente se vuelve muy inclinada, el suelo tiene tierra suelta y hay secciones donde necesitas usar las manos para subir con seguridad. Aquí es donde realmente importan los buenos zapatos, la paciencia y dejar espacio entre personas para no tirar piedras a quienes vienen abajo.

Al llegar arriba, la ruta termina en el mirador, donde tienes vistas impresionantes hacia La Huasteca y Monterrey. Esta ruta llega al área del mirador, no necesariamente a la parte técnica completa del Nido de los Aguiluchos. Para continuar hacia el Nido como tal, se necesita equipo adecuado de escalada o rappel, y lo ideal es ir con alguien certificado o con mucha experiencia. Si llevas equipo y sabes usarlo, existe la opción de hacer rappel hacia una cueva/hueco enorme en la montaña, pero esa parte ya entra en terreno técnico y no debe intentarse como una caminata normal.

El descenso es donde la mayoría debería tener más cuidado. La tierra suelta y los pasos resbalosos hacen que sea fácil caerse, así que baja con calma y evita patear piedras hacia las personas que vienen abajo.
