La M in Chipinque: guide to one of Monterrey's classic routes

La M in Chipinque is one of those routes that eventually ends up on the list of almost anyone who starts hiking in Monterrey.

It makes sense. It has forest, elevation gain, great views, and the feeling of climbing a serious mountain without driving far from the city. But there is one important thing to say from the beginning: La M is not a route to improvise.

Even though Chipinque is a well-known park and many people associate it with casual walks, La M is a different kind of experience. It is longer, more tiring, and requires better fitness, planning, and respect for the mountain.

What is La M in Chipinque?

La M, also known as La Eme, is one of the most iconic routes inside Parque Ecológico Chipinque in San Pedro Garza García, Nuevo León.

It is popular because it combines many things that make a hike feel complete: steady climbing, demanding sections, forest, open views, and a summit that feels like a real reward.

In my La Eme guide, the route is listed at about 16.28 km, around 939 m of elevation gain, and close to 8 hours, depending on your pace, breaks, and conditions.

Is La M difficult?

Yes. La M is a difficult route.

Not because it is the most technical route in Nuevo León, but because it combines distance, elevation gain, accumulated fatigue, and a descent that still asks a lot from your legs.

The most common mistake is thinking, “It is in Chipinque, so it must be easy.” Not necessarily.

Chipinque has easier trails, but La M belongs in a more serious category. If you are just starting hiking and have never done a long route with significant elevation gain, this probably should not be your first choice.

Is La M worth it?

Yes. Very much.

La M is one of those routes that reminds you why Monterrey is such a good city for hiking. You can be close to the city and still feel like you are inside a huge mountain.

The views are one of the best parts. As you gain elevation, you start seeing Monterrey, San Pedro, the Sierra Madre, and the landscape around the city.

It is also a great route for measuring progress. If you have already done easier trails and want something longer, more physical, and more complete, La M can be an excellent next step.

What to know before hiking La M

Before going, check the current Chipinque rules. Access, hours, permits, and conditions can change, especially for summit routes.

Start early. A long route needs extra time, and you do not want to be pressured by heat, daylight, or tired legs on the descent.

Bring the route downloaded and do not depend completely on cell signal. For this hike, I would bring water, electrolytes, real food, snacks, a headlamp, sun protection, shoes with good grip, a power bank, a basic first-aid kit, and a light extra layer.

Is La M good for beginners?

It depends on what kind of beginner you are.

If you are new to hiking but already run, train, have strong fitness, and have done moderate routes, you might be able to do La M with someone experienced.

If you are a beginner who has never climbed a long mountain route, then no. Start with friendlier hikes, learn your pace, and progress little by little.

The mountain is not going anywhere. Choosing a route that actually matches your level is one of the smartest decisions you can make.

Tips for hiking La M

Do not start late. Do not bring too little water. Do not go alone if you do not have experience. And respect your pace.

La M is not about destroying yourself. It is about arriving well, enjoying the route, and getting back safely.

Final recommendation

La M in Chipinque is incredible, but it should be taken seriously.

If you already have experience and want a classic Monterrey route with spectacular views, La M is absolutely worth it. If you are just starting, wait a little, build fitness, and do it when you are ready.

La M is the kind of route you remember. Just do not go completely unprepared. Okay, maybe a little unprepared. But with water.
